Austin at a glance
Austin is the capital of Texas and the county seat of Travis County; parts of the city extend into Williamson and Hays counties (City of Austin). The wider area includes cities such as Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, Kyle and Buda, each with its own neighborhoods and new-construction communities.
Homes you can tour
Downtown and central Austin offer high-rise and mid-rise condos and townhomes. Established neighborhoods across the city have single-family homes in a range of ages and styles, and the surrounding cities add master-planned new-construction communities with model homes, quick move-in homes and community amenities. Apartment communities are spread across the metro, and we tour the actual unit on video before you apply.
Getting around
The main routes are I-35, the MoPac Expressway (Loop 1), US-183 and SH-71, with the SH-130 and SH-45 toll roads around the edges of the metro. Capital Metro (CapMetro) runs buses and the MetroRail Red Line. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) sits southeast of downtown. Parks, water and outdoors
Lady Bird Lake runs through downtown with the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail around it. Zilker Park and Barton Springs Pool are just south of the river, Lake Travis lies to the west, and the city maintains hundreds of parks and miles of trails (Austin Parks and Recreation).
Taxes, schools and public information
Texas has no state personal income tax (Texas Comptroller). Property taxes are set by local taxing units; check current values and rates with the appraisal district — Travis Central Appraisal District or Williamson Central Appraisal District.
